Shungite is an ancient Precambrian carbon-rich mineraloid estimated to be over 2 billion years old, notable for its high carbon content and the presence of fullerenes (C60 molecules). Elite shungite (type I) contains up to 98% carbon and displays a striking bright metallic silver luster unlike any other form. Type II and III shungite have lower carbon content and a matte black appearance. With a Mohs hardness of 3.5–4, shungite is best suited for tumbled pieces, spheres, pyramids, and display specimens.
